Throughout the last few years, we have seen different advancements in mobile technology. One thing mentioned in every advert for these devices is the idea of 3G, 4G and 5G. What does this mean?

When mobile phones came out, the first generation of signals was introduced. As time passes and more people need access, the needs for our technology are more significant. With every generation getting faster, wireless speed, capacity and strength of your signal, wife, downloading and streaming. To put it in simple terms, the ‘G’ stands for Generation, and the generation part refers to your phone’s signal and wifi capabilities. 4G refers to the fourth generation of the wireless signal, and 5G is the fifth. 

Where did it come from?

The G system came into our lives in 1980 after the invention of the mobile phone, which allowed comparable data to transmit via phone calls. Since then, technology has been advancing significantly, and we have a much wider variety of things we can do with our phones, creating a more significant need for a capability. 

The Fifth Generation came out in 2019 to level up on the previous Fourth Generation. According to the Global Data website, in 2020, the use of 4G was around 66.6% of total mobile subscriptions. Since 5G came out, people have changed over, and 4G is lessening in users over time. That means that more masts have to be built around the world.

Those who own a mobile phone tend to carry it wherever they go. We need it to make phone calls, text, use social media, gain access to our emails, and more. We consume a lot of media. So we need our phones to keep up with our communications, downloads, streams, music, and work wherever we happen to. 

4G was made in 2009. Its peak speed was around 10mbps (megabytes per second), whereas, in comparison, 5G offers speeds of 10mbps and 20mbps. The performance rate of the 5G is up to 100 times faster than 4G. stated that we could download a three-hour film in around two minutes, which is a giant leap from waiting for hours.


Another difference between 4G and 5G is coverage area. The range of a 4G network is typically limited to 2 miles from its transmitter, while a 5G network can cover up to 30 miles from its transmitter. This increased range means that more people can access a 5G network from further away than they could with a 4G network, making it much more widely accessible in rural areas where broadband access may be hard to come by.

Frequency Bandwidths

The frequency bandwidths used by both 4G and 5GHz networks also differ. While both use radio waves, the frequencies used by each technology vary considerably; 4GHz networks use frequencies in the 800-1900 MHz range, while 5GHz networks use frequencies in the 24 GHz – 39 GHz range. These different frequencies mean more data can be transmitted over a larger area using a 5GHz network than a 4GHz network, resulting in increased speed and coverage area.

As you can see, there are some significant differences between 4g and 5g networks regarding speed, coverage area, and frequency bandwidths.

While both technologies have their unique strengths and weaknesses, it’s clear that 5g offers many advantages over its predecessor when providing high-speed internet access, no matter where you are located or what kind of device you’re using.
