So what exactly are Facebook and Meta?

Facebook has recently changed its name from the recognisable “Facebook” to meta. The ever-loved white “F” in the blue background could be gone forever, but why? Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced changes in the company at a “connect” conference on October 28, 2021. Once the announcement that the giant social media platform would be rebranding to “meta”, there were many unknown questions and answers.

That isn’t the first time we’ve seen giant companies rebranding, but it shouldn’t be a shock. Take Google, for example; in 2015, it vested with its parent company, “Alphabet.” That leads to the question: did Google’s rebranding affect how we search? The simple answer is no. Google continued to stay consistent, and Facebook has kept the same standards.

Facebook wanted to rebrand so the company could move forward by incorporating social media with VR and AR, which was their primary focus to progress. Their focus was to have a new logo and structure but the social media platform and name to retain. But where did they get the word “meta”?

According to cloudwards.co.uk, “The name Meta is derived from the ‘metaverse’, which is a term that existed since the 1990s.” They also stated, “the term generally refers to the integration of the internet with some form of virtual or augmented reality.” That means that ‘Meta’ or the ‘metaverse’ combines our everyday use of the internet and our knowledge of VR and AR to create a different user experience.

Since the launch date of Meta, Facebook alone has been growing, according to statistic.com. They state that Facebook’s monthly users worldwide in 2021 was 2.91 Billion. Going into the financials of Meta, its annual income in 2021 was $39.37 Billion, with its ad revenue reaching a massive $114.93 Billion.

Facebook’s rebranding to Meta shouldn’t change how we use social media. The only real difference is how the company is run. The statistics show that Mark Zuckerberg might have made the right move at the right time, but what do you think?
