Stay safe using your debit card online

Using your credit or debit cards online has become a natural habit. Buying online has become more accessible and quicker for all generations. Whether you are buying on Amazon or ASOS, making payments online has an umbrella of concerns. But how do we know it’s safe?

Buying online has been deemed safe as long as the user is competent in checking website security. The security of the device and the site a customer is shopping from should not cause any issues. Unfortunately, people using the internet are more internet savvy and therefore can be taken advantage of by stealing their card details. In an ideal world, we would all love for all sites to be safe, never to get scammed or hacked, but this is not reality.

In today’s climate recovering from Covid-19, more people buy online to avoid the spread. According to Statista, the monthly volume of online card transactions made in the UK fluctuated between November 2019 and October 2021. As of October 2021, the total online transaction value amounted to £24.4 billion.

What are the advantages?

A significant advantage of using your payment card online is the convenience. Having your card details saved onto your devices or regular websites makes adding items to your checkout easier. Our card details are stored on websites like Amazon, so we are more likely to click the “buy now” button. Not only as consumers are this convenient but from a business point of view, enabling customers to pay with their cards on a company website can be a fundamental way to connect. It is so convenient that according to invoiceberry.com, 35% of millennials regularly use their phones to pay online.

Another advantage of using your cards online is security. If you use credit cards online, Capital One can protect them more when shopping online. You can save yourself using companies that offer “virtual credit card numbers as if the worst scenario happens and your details get scammed. Credit cards protect you online from scammers as you aren’t liable for reported charges!

What are the disadvantages?

However, using card payments online can be too convenient and cause crippling debt, a significant disadvantage. Using card payments at the click of a button is often described as “too easy”, and the plastic cards don’t feel like you are spending money. When using credit cards, purchases rack up interest, and if you cannot make the monthly payments, it can build up significant bills you struggle to pay back.

Another disadvantage of using your debit/credit cards online is the risk of card fraud. We all know someone that has been targeted with purchases they didn’t make. Making sure the website you visit is secure is crucial. Using these unsecured websites makes you more vulnerable to being scammed and your card details getting saved. That alone can cause stress on the recipient with worry about paying the money back or monthly bills needing to be paid through frozen accounts while the fraud squad deals with the issue.

Making payments online with your card is generally fast, easy and safe if you understand how to stay safe online. Most well-known companies allow card payments on their websites, but could there be a new alien way of paying for your online shopping around the corner?
