So what exactly is Medical Technology?

As the world has advanced over the centuries, medical technology is one of the most significant achievements of this process. What we mean by this is the machines, medicines and procedures developed to help doctors diagnose, prevent and treat. 

For as long as humans have been alive, the theory and practice of medical help and study have been underway. The studies can be traced way back to the later years of the fifth century before Christ. The Greeks had theorised that there were four main medical elements for the human body: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. These aspects’ increase or decrease signified something was wrong with the patient. 

Technology was relatively simple in the days of Greek doctors. They employed history-taking techniques, visual observation, and palpation to maintain health and combat illness. Simple and compound drugs, like ointments, compresses, bandages, and surgical instruments, used to be taken moderately. 

That was over two thousand five hundred years ago! You will have plasters, glasses, and thermometers in your home or shops. How has technology changed the Greeks’ way? Five different areas of technology have developed. 

The first one is Prevention technology.

Prevention technology was created to help people before they get sick. These would include clinical trials and data research, which allows to find early causes and explore solutions before problems arrive. 

The second one is Diagnostic technology.

Their sole purpose is to discover what exactly is wrong with someone. The primary examples of this that you would have heard about it are MRIs, which are Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines. These use magnetic fields and radio waves generated by a computer to show detailed images of the inside of your body. It helps to find tumours, leaks, and breaks and determine if something is wrong with the patient’s organs. Another excellent example of this is CT scans. CT stands for a Computerised Tomography scan which uses X-ray images of your body and processes them together. That is a much more detailed version of plain X-rays. 

The third area of medical technology is Monitoring technology. 

These are to support patients and keep track of everything going on with their bodies. The Vital Signs Monitors are hooked up to patients and stay beside their beds. These monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels. The monitor will make sounds when a vital sign falls below a safe level. 

Fourthly, there are Treatment technologies that aid people in getting better. 

Treatment technology is constantly evolving. Technology is getting better and better every year. An example of treatment technology is a Dialysis machine, which pumps blood through and cleans it before pumping it back into the body!

And lastly, there’s Care technology.

These are the medicines we take and use daily to look after our ongoing or sudden illnesses and diseases. These types of items would include inhalers, epi-pens, and painkillers.

What are the advantages?

The advantages and benefits of these advancements are staggeringly increasing by the day. They are life-saving and have been aiding medical professionals in diagnosing and treating patients for centuries. The significant aspect is that most of these devices are portable and capable of multiple uses on multiple people. Another fantastic advantage is that these devices can help create a massive online database, meaning that all patient information en saved on the device. Therefore, it keeps the professionals’ time and minimises errors by preventing them from having to document everything by hand. 

What are the disadvantages?

The technology of this stature is costly to manufacture, buy, run and maintain. Some say these costs are worth the investment as they can save hundreds of lives and more than pay for themselves. There are also many disadvantages, but do they outweigh the advantages? 

A big issue could be that if some of these machines malfunction and then proceed to give out the wrong results, which can lead to more injury, illness or even death in the patients. 

In 2021, medical solutions delivered via mobile apps will become an increasingly popular trend. It makes sense for your smartphone to tell you whether you’re leading a healthy lifestyle, mainly because Millennials spend an average of 5.7 hours on their phones daily (and 13% spend over 12 hours).
