So, what is deep tech?

The definition of deep tech – is technology based on engineering innovation and scientific advances or discoveries. Despite the lack of public knowledge, it is one of the most important technological applications. 

But what does this mean? 

It provides clarity for the term and illustrates what deep tech is. In layman’s terms, pioneering technology is in the form of start-ups. Google and Microsoft started life as deep tech start-ups and have grown to be enormous multinational corporations, proving the concept’s significance. 

The Moderna vaccine

Another of these start-ups which have recently become a household name is Moderna, the company whose Covid-19 vaccines have helped fight the pandemic and saved the lives of millions. Deep tech is applied technology used to solve engineering and scientific problems. 

Deep tech ties into much of the Digitize articles, blockchain and automated air mobility, to name just two, and is at the core of today’s technological industry. The idea is to bring together many talented individuals – scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs – to solve a problem or fill a hole in the market by often developing new technologies. For example, SpaceX created never before seen technology when they designed and built their landable rocket boosters, solving the decades-old logistical and financial problem of single-use SRBs or Solid Rocket Boosters. 

In the same field, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin developed similar technology in the same area to make space travel more accessible and cheaper. These both illustrate the aim of the deep tech industry, to create a new solution to problems through revolutionary innovation and, critically, the utilisation of a variety of skill sets. 

Sustainable solutions

However, not every example of a deep tech start-up is developing new technology. Boom Supersonic is working to create a supersonic airliner using predominantly pre-existing tech with prior certification and a clean safety record. Because there is no need to develop new technology to solve the problem, they will use what already exists in a modern application. 

What makes a deep tech venture? 

There are several predominant attributes; problem-oriented, operating at the convergence of technologies, and focused on hardware rather than software. To be problem-oriented is to focus on significant issues and create an appropriate solution. Almost all deep tech start-ups use multiple technologies in their work, and around 70% own patents, emphasising the importance of combining expertise to achieve a final product. 83% of deep tech ventures aim to build a physical product which is why they tend to require the skillset of a multitude of specialists from different fields. The main aim of deep tech is to have as significant an impact as possible; thus, these endeavours tend to have a great deal of social influence. 

Examples of up-and-coming deep tech start-ups

Some inspiring companies are developing new technology to tackle modern problems. 

Lilium aviation is a start-up that wants to change how people travel entirely. It is developing the world’s first fully electric jet with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). Lightweight, silent and environmentally friendly, the plane seeks to eliminate city congestion and pollution and offer inter-city travel faster than public transportation.

Overall, the significance of deep tech is in our everyday lives, and the number of people these ventures benefit from is extensive. Numerous unsolved problems exist in the world, and fundamentally, deep tech can provide solutions. 

By combining the skills of engineers and scientists, along with the market expertise of entrepreneurs, it is possible to develop solutions many thought impossible. 

We can now tackle challenges with a level of success and efficiency that was once unattainable and not achievable by a more traditional approach.
