What is a smartphone, really?
Step 1

Spot the Smartphone!

️ Talk / Verbal
We are learning to notice what makes a smartphone different from a toy phone or a book. Your task: Look around your room, or look at picture cards. Talk with a partner: how is a smartphone different from a toy phone? What magical things can a smartphone do?
  • 5 minutes.
I can spot a smartphone and say one thing that makes it special.
→ This helps you become an App Detective

Step 2

App Sorting Magic!

️ Hands-on / Kinaesthetic
We are learning to understand that apps are tools, and every tool does a different job.

Smartphones use special tools called apps.

Your task: Take your picture cards and sort them into 3 magic baskets: Games, Camera and Photos, and Helper Tools.
  • 8 minutes.
I can sort apps into the right basket by the job they do.
→ This helps you become an App Detective

Step 3

Be the App!

Move / Stand up
We are learning to act out what different apps actually do. Your task: Stand up! Choose one app, like the Camera or Music app. When your teacher or partner says ‘Tap!’, jump up and make the app’s sound or action.
  • 7 minutes.
I can show what an app does using my body and voice.
→ This helps you become an App Detective

Step 4

The Safe Tap Rule!

️ Talk / Verbal
We are learning to know the one rule to follow before tapping a new app. Choose your track:
  • Quick track: Practice saying out loud, ‘Grown-up, may I tap this?’
  • Dig deeper: Ask an adult to show you where the App Store lock is on a real phone.
  • 5 minutes.
I can say who I should always ask before tapping a new app.
→ This helps you become an App Detective

Age, Stage and Prior Learning: P1-P3 (ages 4 to 7), Foundation level. No prior digital experience needed, this is a fully unplugged, physical introduction using picture cards, movement and drawing rather than devices.
Before You Start: Prepare a set of picture cards showing different apps (games, camera, music, maps) for Step 2's sorting activity. No devices are required for this challenge, everything is physical and verbal.
How to Open This: "Today we're going to be App Detectives! We're going to solve the mystery of what's inside a smartphone, and by the end, you'll design your very own helper app to show the class."
Scheduling: Designed to run in one sitting, 30 to 45 minutes total. If your class needs more movement breaks, Steps 3 and 4 can be split across two shorter sessions naturally, since Step 3 is active and Step 4 is a calmer discussion.
If a Pupil Gets Stuck: If a child is unsure during the app-sorting step, sort as a whole group first using the board or floor, then let pairs try their own set once they've seen it modelled.
For Fast Finishers: Confident pupils can design a second helper app card for a different job, or explain to a partner why their app is different from an app that just plays games.
Marking Guidance: There's no right or wrong helper app. Look for: can the child explain what job their app does, and can they say one thing they'd ask a grown-up before downloading a new app.
